Holographic Displays Set to Transform Bike Shop Showrooms

Bike shops could soon be showing off frames and components in full 3D without customers needing to don a headset, thanks to new holographic display technology unveiled by VividQ. The Cambridge-based firm, known for its work in holographic imaging, says its system allows retailers to project lifelike, three-dimensional images of bikes and parts that shoppers can view with the naked eye.

Unlike traditional screens or virtual reality setups, VividQ’s approach uses computer-generated holography to create genuine depth and perspective, meaning a customer walking around a display could see a bike appear to rotate and sit in real space. The company is pitching the technology squarely at retail environments, suggesting it could be used for everything from showcasing new season ranges to letting shoppers examine finer details of a frame’s geometry or a groupset’s finish before committing to a purchase.

Details on cost and rollout timescales remain scarce, but the announcement points to growing interest from the cycle trade in immersive tools that bridge the gap between online browsing and in-person viewing, particularly as more shops trim physical stock in favour of digital catalogues.

For riders, this sort of innovation matters because it could reshape how we shop for bikes and kit on the high street. Anyone who has hesitated over a big-ticket purchase without being able to properly inspect a frame’s tubing or a wheel’s rim profile will understand the appeal of a display that offers more than a flat photo or a spec sheet. If holographic previews become commonplace, independent bike shops may find a genuine point of difference against faceless online retailers, giving customers a reason to walk through the door rather than simply add to basket.
