Gtechniq unveils PFAS-free waterproofing spray for cycling kit

Detailing specialist Gtechniq has moved into cycling apparel care with the launch of Fabric Proof, a new durable water repellent spray that contains no PFAS – the so-called “forever chemicals” that have long underpinned most fabric proofing treatments.

The spray is aimed squarely at riders looking to refresh the weatherproofing on jackets, jerseys, bib tights, softshells, overshoes and other technical kit that has lost its bead over time through washing and wear. Gtechniq says the formula bonds to fabric fibres to reinstate water repellency without leaving garments feeling stiff, sticky or noticeably altered in breathability – a common gripe with older proofing sprays.

Crucially, the brand claims Fabric Proof avoids the environmental and health concerns increasingly associated with PFAS-based treatments, which have faced growing scrutiny from regulators and outdoor brands alike. Several major clothing manufacturers have already begun phasing PFAS out of their own waterproof ranges, so a standalone retreatment product free of the chemicals fills a useful gap for owners of ageing kit.

For UK riders, this matters well beyond the lab. Sustained wet-weather training and racing through a British winter puts real strain on a jacket’s DWR coating, and a soggy, saturated outer layer quickly becomes heavy, cold and miserable rather than protective. A reliable, non-toxic way to extend the life of existing waterproofs could save cyclists from replacing expensive shells every season, while also chiming with the wider push across the bike industry to cut down on persistent chemical pollutants.

Gtechniq, better known for car and bicycle frame protection coatings, says Fabric Proof will be available through its usual retail and online channels, with application via a simple spray-and-dry process suited to home use.
