Ortlieb Unveils In-House Waterproof Fabric to Sharpen Grip on Quality

German luggage specialist Ortlieb has pulled the curtain back on TIDURA, a new proprietary waterproof fabric system that will underpin its panniers, backpacks and duffle bags going forward. Rather than sourcing materials from external suppliers, the company says it can now manage the entire production chain itself, from weaving and coating the fabric through to welding seams and fitting closures.

Ortlieb frames the move as a bid to tighten quality control and consistency across its range, arguing that owning every stage of manufacture allows for better oversight of durability and waterproofing performance than relying on third-party textiles. The brand has built its reputation on rugged, weatherproof gear favoured by touring cyclists, commuters and bikepackers, so a shift towards fully in-house materials is a notable strategic step rather than a minor tweak to the product line.

Full technical specifications and pricing for products using TIDURA have yet to be detailed, but Ortlieb says the fabric will gradually roll out across its pannier, backpack and duffle collections.

For riders who spend long days in the saddle away from home, whether loaded up for an audax, a multi-day bikepacking route or a wet commute across the Pennines, kit that reliably keeps water out is far from a luxury. Ortlieb’s bags are a familiar sight at gravel and touring events precisely because failures in cheap waterproofing can ruin electronics, spare kit and morale alike, so any genuine gains in seam integrity and fabric longevity should filter through to real-world reliability on British roads and trails.
