Volkswagen-backed n+ Reveals Radar-Equipped ‘Safest’ E-Bike

Volkswagen’s e-mobility offshoot n+ has confirmed plans to launch a new Smart eBike that borrows heavily from the car giant’s safety playbook, billing it as “the world’s safest eBike” on the market.

The machine will feature automotive-grade radar sensors alongside an integrated rear-view camera, designed to alert riders to approaching vehicles and hazards from behind long before they become audible or visible in a wing mirror. The system is understood to feed live data to a display or app, giving cyclists an early warning system more commonly found in modern cars than on two wheels.

Full technical specifications and pricing have yet to be released, but the announcement signals a growing trend of car manufacturers dipping into cycling technology, applying crash-avoidance systems developed for motoring to bicycles and e-bikes. Volkswagen has previously experimented with micromobility concepts, and this latest venture suggests a more serious commercial push into the e-bike sector.

For riders, particularly those who commute on busy urban roads, rear-approach awareness remains one of the biggest safety gaps in everyday cycling. Existing radar-based products, such as rear lights with built-in proximity sensors, have already proven popular among road cyclists, and a factory-fitted, automotive-grade system could set a new benchmark for what buyers expect as standard on premium e-bikes.

It also raises an interesting question for the wider industry: as car manufacturers bring deeper pockets and safety-engineering expertise to cycling, will radar and camera-assisted riding become as standard on e-bikes as it now is on new cars? On Track will be watching closely for further details as n+ moves towards a full unveiling.
