Wahoo Splits App Into Three Subscription Tiers
Wahoo Fitness has overhauled the way riders access its companion app, introducing a three-tier subscription structure in place of its previous single-membership model. The change affects users of Wahoo’s ELEMNT bike computers, KICKR smart trainers and heart rate accessories, all of which rely on the app for pairing, ride data and training features.
According to the US-based company, the new structure is designed to let cyclists choose a package that better matches how they train, ranging from a free entry-level option covering basic device syncing and ride tracking, through to a mid-tier plan adding features such as structured workouts and deeper performance analytics, up to a premium subscription bundling Wahoo’s full suite of coaching tools, personalised training plans and advanced metrics.
Wahoo says the tiered approach reflects growing demand from both casual riders who simply want reliable data recording and dedicated racers seeking granular insight into power, heart rate and recovery trends. The move brings Wahoo into line with rivals such as Zwift, TrainingPeaks and Garmin Connect, all of which have shifted towards layered subscription pricing in recent years as hardware makers increasingly monetise software and data services alongside their devices.
For UK riders, the practical impact will depend on which features get pushed behind the paywall versus which remain free. Anyone training seriously on a KICKR through the winter, or relying on ELEMNT head units for structured intervals, should check their current plan carefully before assuming existing functionality will continue unchanged. It’s another sign that even established hardware brands now expect ongoing subscription revenue rather than a one-off purchase, a trend worth watching for anyone budgeting for next season’s training kit.
