Cycling Bodies Urge PM to Back u00a330m Legacy Fund Ahead of 2027 Tour de France Grand Du00e9part

A coalition of cycling organisations and council leaders has written an open letter to the Prime Minister, Andy Burnham, urging the Government to commit u00a330 million towards improving cycling infrastructure across the UK before the Tour de France and Tour de France Femmes begin their Grand Du00e9parts on British roads in 2027.

The signatories argue that without significant investment in safe routes, cycle lanes and public spaces for riding, the huge publicity boost from hosting the world’s biggest bike race risks fading quickly, just as previous Grand Du00e9parts have done. They want the funding used to create lasting facilities that encourage everyday cycling long after the peloton has left, rather than a short-lived spike in interest.

The letter comes from a broad alliance including cycling advocacy groups and representatives of local authorities expected to host stages of the race, who say a genuine legacy requires long-term planning and dedicated funding now, not after the event. They point to previous UK Grand Du00e9parts, including Yorkshire’s 2014 edition, as proof that enthusiasm alone doesn’t guarantee permanent change without infrastructure to match.

For riders across Britain, the outcome of this campaign could shape whether 2027 marks a genuine turning point for everyday cycling provision or simply another fleeting festival of lycra and bunting. On Track will be watching closely to see whether ministers respond with real commitment, and what it could mean for club riders and commuters hoping for safer roads well beyond the finish line in 2027.
