Continental Widens Aero 111 Range with Wider 32mm Option
Continental has added a 32mm option to its Aero 111 road tyre family, giving riders a wider choice for those who want the model’s aerodynamic credentials without sacrificing comfort on rougher tarmac. The tyre was engineered in partnership with Swiss Side and DT Swiss, and like the rest of the range it is built specifically for use on the front wheel, where Continental says drag reduction has the greatest impact on overall bike speed.
The wider casing is aimed at riders tackling poor road surfaces, long sportives or events where stability and vibration damping matter as much as outright pace. Continental’s engineers claim the 32mm version retains the same aero-focused tread and compound tuning developed for the narrower Aero 111 tyres, simply scaled up to suit modern wide-rim wheelsets that have become increasingly common on endurance and all-road bikes.
For UK riders, the launch reflects a wider shift in road cycling towards larger tyre volumes, even among those chasing aerodynamic gains. Many club riders and sportive entrants have already moved to 28mm or 30mm tyres for comfort on Britain’s often battered lanes, and a dedicated aero option in a wider size suggests manufacturers now see this as mainstream rather than a niche gravel-adjacent choice.
It also points to growing collaboration between tyre and wheel brands, with rim width and tyre profile increasingly designed together rather than as separate components. Riders upgrading wheelsets this season may find it worth checking compatibility with the new Aero 111, particularly if chasing marginal gains without giving up the resilience needed for typical UK road conditions.
