Motul Brings Motorsport-Grade Lubricant Technology to the Bike Chain
French lubricant specialist Motul has turned its attention from motorbikes to pedal bikes, unveiling a new Racing Chain Lube designed to squeeze extra efficiency out of a rider’s drivetrain. The product now sits at the top of the firm’s expanding Motul Bike Care range, aimed squarely at competitive cyclists chasing marginal gains.
The lube borrows Motul’s ESTER technology, a formulation long used in its motorcycle and motorsport oils, which the company says clings more effectively to metal surfaces than conventional chain treatments. The result, Motul claims, is reduced friction between chain and cassette, smoother shifting, and less wear over time, all without attracting excessive dirt and grit.
Motul is better known in paddocks than pelotons, having built its reputation supplying lubricants to motorcycle racing teams and endurance motorsport outfits. Bringing that expertise to bicycle care marks a deliberate push into the cycling market, where the firm believes its chemistry background gives it an edge over lubricant brands with no motorsport pedigree.
For everyday riders, chain lube might seem a minor detail, but drivetrain friction has become a genuine talking point in performance circles. Studies by independent testing labs have shown that the difference between a poorly lubricated chain and an optimised one can amount to several watts, a figure that matters enormously in time trials, road races, and even competitive club rides where fine margins decide results. With more riders now measuring watts saved as closely as watts produced, product launches like this reflect how even the smallest components of a bike are being scrutinised for hidden performance gains.
Motul has not yet confirmed UK retail pricing or availability, though the Racing Chain Lube is expected to reach specialist bike shops and online retailers as part of the wider Bike Care launch.
