Amsterdam-based stepless shifting specialist Enviolo has strengthened its senior leadership team with the appointment of Dr Omar El Nayal as chief operating officer, a newly-created position that brings together operations and supply chain, data and analytics, and environmental, social and governance (ESG) responsibilities.
El Nayal is no stranger to the company, having joined Enviolo three years ago as its first director of ESG. His move into the COO role, which took effect on 1 August, sees him take on a considerably broader remit and report directly to the company’s chief executive.
The appointment reflects a growing trend among component manufacturers to consolidate sustainability efforts with core operational functions, rather than treating ESG as a standalone side project. For Enviolo, whose continuously variable transmission hubs are increasingly specified on urban, e-bike and utility bicycles, having a single senior figure overseeing both supply chain resilience and environmental strategy could prove significant as the industry faces ongoing pressure over sourcing, emissions and component longevity.
While Enviolo’s technology sits outside the drop-bar racing scene that dominates much of our coverage, the firm’s hubs are widely used across commuter, gravel-adjacent and e-bike platforms that many On Track readers rely on for training miles, commuting to the track, or simply getting about when the race bike is racked up. Decisions made at boardroom level about supply chains and sustainable manufacturing ultimately filter down to component availability, pricing and durability for everyday riders, making this sort of appointment more relevant to the wider cycling community than it might first appear.
No further changes to Enviolo’s leadership structure have been announced alongside El Nayal’s promotion. The company has not indicated whether a replacement will be sought for his previous ESG-focused position, though it seems more likely that those duties will now sit permanently within his expanded COO brief.
