New Sell-In Data Tool Aims to Sharpen Cycling Industry’s Crystal Ball

European Cycling Industries (ECI) has teamed up with sports data specialists Sporting Insights to launch a fresh market intelligence platform designed to give bike brands a clearer view of trading patterns across the continent.

Named SoTEC u2013 State of Trade European Cycling u2013 the system will deliver monthly sell-in figures on a quarterly basis, offering manufacturers and distributors a more reliable alternative to the guesswork and patchwork estimates that have traditionally shaped industry planning.

ECI says the platform is intended to move the sector away from reactive, gut-feel forecasting towards decisions grounded in consistent, comparable data drawn from across European markets. For an industry that has been buffeted in recent years by wild swings between pandemic-era shortages and subsequent overstock, the promise of steadier, evidence-based forecasting will be welcomed by brands still working through inventory headaches.

While the tool is aimed squarely at manufacturers, distributors and retailers rather than riders themselves, its knock-on effects could be felt at bike shop level and beyond. Better demand forecasting should, in theory, mean fewer supply gaps on popular models, more accurate pricing, and less of the boom-and-bust stock cycles that have left some riders facing long waits for parts or bikes in recent seasons u2013 while others found themselves tempted by heavy discounting on unsold stock.

ECI, which represents cycling industry bodies from several European countries, positions the initiative as part of a broader push to professionalise data sharing within the sector, an area where cycling has historically lagged behind other consumer industries such as automotive and sports retail.

Further details on participating brands and how retailers might eventually access aggregated insights are expected to follow as the platform beds in over its first reporting cycles.
