Gtechniq Rolls Out PFAS-Free Waterproofing Spray for Riding Kit

Surface care specialist Gtechniq has introduced Fabric Proof, a new water-repellent treatment aimed at keeping clothing and other textiles dry without relying on the so-called ‘forever chemicals’ found in many traditional proofing sprays.

The formula is PFAS-free, meaning it avoids the persistent per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances that have come under increasing scrutiny from regulators and environmental groups due to their tendency to linger in soil, water and even the human body. Gtechniq says Fabric Proof still delivers robust beading and water resistance, offering an alternative for consumers keen to steer clear of the more contentious chemistry without sacrificing performance.

Although pitched as a general-purpose product suitable for a wide range of fabrics, the launch will be of particular interest to cyclists who spend hours in the saddle through the British winter. Jackets, gilets, overshoes and even bar bags gradually lose their factory-applied water resistance after repeated washing and general wear, and a reliable top-up treatment can extend the useful life of kit that would otherwise need replacing. With many riders already reconsidering PFAS-heavy treatments on health and environmental grounds, a spray that claims to match old-school performance without the same chemical baggage is a timely addition to the workshop shelf.

Gtechniq, better known in some circles for car and bike detailing products, has not detailed pricing or specific application instructions for cycling apparel, though the product is expected to follow a similar spray-and-buff approach to the brand’s other protective coatings. As more outdoor and cycling brands move away from PFAS in their own garment treatments, aftermarket sprays like Fabric Proof could become a useful stopgap for extending the life of older jackets that predate the shift.
